Our scientific advisor, Dr. Kelly Jahn, wrote this excellent, informative piece for ENT & Audiology News, which is a leading international magazine and digital hub that connects the fields of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgery and hearing healthcare. Dr. Jahn explains the symptoms and severity levels of loudness hyperacusis and pain hyperacusis, and how the painful version frequently causes patients setbacks and co-occurs with debilitating comorbidities like tinnitus, migraines, and anxiety.
She makes it clear that the loudness and pain variants of hyperacusis are distinct but overlapping, and that theories suggest they arise from both central auditory gain—which amplifies sound—and peripheral dysfunction in the middle/inner ear, which triggers physical pain (potentially related to an overactive tensor tympani muscle or trigeminal nerves). She drives home the point that patients literally feel physical pain triggered by sounds, which is something clinicians sometimes have trouble understanding.
Due to this, Dr. Jahn addresses the need for clinicians to handle the loudness and pain variants carefully. She also explores the prevalence of hyperacusis.

in other words, a chronic disease for which there is no cure.
This disease has turned my life upside down. Unable to work, socialize, and homebound for large periods of time. I also have periodontitis from not attending the dentist regularly.
How this disease has been neglected is hard to reconcile.
I can tell you my MAIN issues is tinnitus loudness H autophony all of which are severe and disabling! I had an acoustic injury form a Tesla 3 enclosed MRI. Hospital negligence which of course said we could not prove. I occasionally get pain but in quiet.
Suffering from hyperacusis pain (Noxacusis) since 2025; I’ve lost the ability to socialize, go to church, work, and struggle to even keep up with hygiene. Hyperacusis strips you of everything you’ve enjoyed and lived for, then throws you down a dark hole. No one can truly see how many people are down until you’ve become a sufferer. We cry and we pray.
